When asked to name some of the most popular Malaysian foods, “Lam Mee” is rarely noted in the list but a visit downtown to Pudu to the famous May King restaurant may just change your mind! This little eatery is located on the same row as the famous Pudu open air wet market under the flyover – opposite of Wenworth Hotel.
It’s interesting to note that May King has an “A” rating for cleanliness and is air conditioned so dine with no fear! There is a signage that says all tables are to be shared so expect to have lunch with other hungry patrons during lunch hour.
May King is famous for its signature Lam Mee since the late 1950s and true enough it did not disappoint. The thick starchy gravy was thick and rich in flavour and complemented the noodles very well. You may add some vinegar or sambal belacan to your noodles for an extra kick.
The Signature Curry Mee was delicious at first bite and very fragrant but its thick and spicy gravy can quickly exhaust the tastebuds leaving one thirsty. Unlike the usual curry mee we’re all accustomed to, May King’s only condiments were some beansprouts, shredded chicken and prawns. We reckon some cockles and fried tofu would’ve gave it more chew given the price. Other noodles on the menu include Dry Gravy Noodle and Yummy Hor Fun. All noodles go for RM6.00 a plate and you can choose your noodles from yellow mee, mee hoon and kuey teow.
May King also offers a variety of snacks to share such as the Homemade Kampar Tofu, Pork and prawn dumplings, deep fried foo cheok roll and homemade QQ fish ball from RM1.10-1.30 per piece. It’s not hard to see why May King seems to have a constant full house. Food is served very quickly, so if you’re willing to brave the KL jam for a good old bowl of Lam Mee, May King’s the place to go.
