Recently transformed into a booming holiday retreat, Bagan Lalang is a beach destination near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in the Sepang district. That’s right, 60km away from Kuala Lumpur city resides sunny weather, an untouched beach, and a wide span of beautiful scenery. As if it’s just around the corner, in our city’s backyard.
Bagan Lalang was once a quiet village until the recent years – it was put through a complete facelift with the development of the integrated resort, Sepang Gold Coast.
Now a booming holiday retreat, the Sepang Gold Coast resort features the Golden Palm Tree Sea Villas, which is the first of a series of luxury hotel and apartment projects. Not only has it attracted locals, international visitors transiting at our KLIA now have a convenient spot for a quick tropical getaway, and a taste of Malaysia, while waiting for their next flight.
The beach is really the one and only focal point of Bagan Lalang and is usually occupied by a throng of people engaging in activities such as picnics, kite-flying, and boating. Because of the “weekender” appeal, numerous hawker stalls and restaurants have since mushroomed along the beach, with offerings of local food such as “ikan bakar”, “satay”, and a delectable array of seafood.
There’s also a vast span of mangrove swamps for wildlife and bird watching. Before Sepang Gold Coast, Bagan Lalang was famous for its mangrove trees that grew abundantly along the coastal fringes and river mouths. The natural vegetation provided a rich habitat for fish, birds, and mamals. Much of it still exists today and visitors can charter a boat for a river cruise or fishing.
Another notable attraction in Bagan Lalang would be Tanjung Sepat, a coastal town in Kuala Langat (about 15km north of Bagan Lalang). Locals and international visitors alike flock the town to explore its charming fishing villages and culinary attractions. Many open-air seafood restaurants are built on stilts across the muddy beachfront and are popular venues for meals.
If and when you decide to go there, be sure to walk along the “Lover’s Bridge” – a long and rickety wooden bridge that leads out to the sea.
And how about that? It’s as though you’re entering another world altogether! A quick, budget getaway to a place that’s not too far away from home, yet packed with all the dosages of rest and relaxation that you might need. There’s no better way to spend a weekend away from the city.
