Cake businesses might be popping up from all corners of our city and while most establishments have their own unique selling points, Bisque has carved a niche in the market for those who want to add a little something or a whole load of everything on their sweet treats.
Headed by siblings Juliana Omar and Hakim Omar along with a team of dedicated bakers, we discovered Bisque sometime last year and although it’s still a relatively new player (Bisque was started in August 2013) in the baking business, the team at this online made-to-order customisable cake service certainly ticks all the right boxes when it comes to convenience (cakes are ordered via their website), variety (there are over 15 delectable types to choose from) and of course, the fact that you can add a wide option of toppings to jazz up your order.
Each time you place an order on the website, www.bisque.com.my, patrons can have the option of adding an extra layer of cake to make one’s order three-tier, extra drizzle (such as mixed berry preserve, fleur de sel caramel, Valrhona Dulcey drizzle and much more), fudgy Valrhona chocolate brownies, seasonal fruit and six types of chocolate toppings. At the heart of it, this is the cake service to frequent if you have a major sweet tooth that needs to be satiated or if you just feel like being indulgent – don’t worry, we’ve met the team at Bisque and they do not judge. In fact, it’s one of those rare places where you can let your taste buds go crazy and dictate your cake choices.
When we sat down with Juliana and Hakim one rainy Friday afternoon, we were lucky enough to sample three of their amazing creations in their Damansara Perdana headquarters. The three cakes we tried were the Royal Red Velvet, Butterscotch Bliss and Blonde Banana topped with a serving of Valrhona Chocolate Brownies.
Needless to say, one can’t really operate a cake business these days without red velvet as most Malaysians are obsessed with it and Bisque makes a decent one with a light cake batter and rich cream cheese frosting. The highlight for us was the Blonde Banana. Hands down, it was the best banana cake I’ve ever had in my life and I’m being justifiably dramatic because it is that good. The cake was light with lots of banana flavor and it had a caramelised banana center that was layered with cream cheese frosting. The Butterscotch drizzle and almond pralines on the top were simple heavenly. The extra Valrhona Chocolate Brownies were so gooey and rich, they were definitely the cherry on top of the icing and we wouldn’t order this cake without it as an additional topping.
The Butterscotch Bliss is perfect for those who want a shot of sugar high without being sickeningly sweet. This cake is made with Italian frosting and lots of Butterscotch drizzle on the top. It was the epitome of rich and indulgent for us and all you need is a small slice to hit the spot.
At the moment, their baking studio is in a centrally located shop lot that’s also their office and the rumour we’ve heard is that the team is working towards setting up a cake café. We think it’s a fabulous idea and can’t wait till it happens! Bisque’s busiest time of the week are Fridays and one can surely imagine why. The bakers churn out around 15 cakes for the weekend and on Saturdays, they open until 12.30pm for pick ups. With the Chinese New Year festivities and Valentine’s Day just around the corner, why not try out Bisque’s customisable cake order service with just the click of a mouse?
