22-year-old Nurul Izzati Ibrahim is the grand prize winner of RM20,000 in Sunsilk’s Sunsilk Menemanimu Sejak Tahun 2000 contest. She may look young, but the hijabi lights up when she talks about one of her passions, styling the hijab. Her hijab-styling tutorial on YouTube got her an army of more than 19,000 subscribers and five million views.
For the past 15 years, Sunsilk Lively Clean & Fresh has been walking hand-in-hand with women in hijab as they pursue their dreams and aspirations. This year, Sunsilk invited these women to share their personal hijab journey and memories of using Sunsilk via the Sunsilk Menemanimu Sejak Tahun 2000 contest. The contest which ran earlier in 2014 garnered close to 1,000 entries.
Nurul, from University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) said that per passion for hijab styling inspired her to create a YouTube channel, where she demonstrates ways of styling the hijab for every day or special occasions.
Other girls in hijab started following her and soon requested for more tips on fashion and styling. Nurul added that the positive encouragement from her viewers helped develop her self-confidence and drive in achieving her dreams. Aside from playing in her school’s orchestra, she is also active in the local art community and hopes to become a successful architect.
Nurul said she plans to donate her prize money to KL Sketch Nation, an urban community of sketching enthusiasts who aim to inspire others with the art of sketching. This community, which Nurul is proudly part of, often holds sketch walks when they visit landmarks and neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur to bring the local scenes and character to life through sketches.
