As we embrace the brand new year, it’s high time to change your beauty game. Last year, we fell in love with plenty of makeup trends that were hyped up all over the Internet, but let’s be honest, they didn’t work for everyone and some of those makeup trends were just OTT. It’s time to toss them aside and flaunt a more natural, fresher looking you. Here are four major offenders:
1. Instagram brows – We’re pretty sure you’re familiar with some of these terms: Ombre brows, Instagram brows, square-blocked brows. These brows surely look amazing in photos, but they simply don’t work in real life. When your eyebrows look way too flawless and perfect, it comes off as borderline drag queen. Pair the brows with a dramatic makeup look and the effect would be 10 times worse. You just want to clean them up and fill in the sparse areas. Eyebrows are meant to frame your face, not take over the rest of your facial features.
2. Full-on contouring – Stop it with your Kim K references and quit going mental when applying your bronzer. This doesn’t work for every day and it looks horrible, especially under sunlight. It appears cakey and fake. Contouring heavily under your cheekbones, along your hair line and jaw line, and around your nose makes everything look overly dramatic. It changes your natural look completely and heck, it’s frightening. Add depth, not war paint.
3. Excessive highlighting – Sometimes, we all need to fake a good 12-hour sleep and hide those nasty under eye bags. This does NOT mean slapping on the highlighter like there is no tomorrow. We’re not talking about the shimmery kind here. When done right, it can give you a lit-from-within and glowy look. When you apply too much, you’d look like an illuminated ring of light and that’s not pretty. Highlighter lifts your features and brightens up your face. A little goes a long way so don’t go overboard, especially underneath your eyes and around your brow bones.
4. Over-drawn lips – Big lips have been around for centuries and Kylie Jenner did not create those over-drawn, full lips. There is nothing wrong with making your lips look a little plumper compared to normal. But, when your lips instantly become the centre of attention when someone looks your way, you’ve taken it a little too far. Let it go and keep it looking natural.
