A bit about the DRx Clinic & Medispa:
Although DRx has been around since 1999, most people have yet to hear of it, let alone discover what this clinic does. DRx was started by a group of skin aestheticians who found out that over the counter products did not contain enough effective active ingredients to treat certain skin problems effectively. This principle was then applied in the development of a range of products that were not only good but also work well with each other for optimum results.
At DRx, the clinic strongly believes and practices the 3-step system – Prime, Remedy and Protect. Step 1 (Prime) prepares skin for treatment and this comes in the form of cleansing and toning to remove surface lipid film to better absorb the corrective or restorative agents that will come in the next step. Step 2 (Remedy) refers to the treatment products that are prescribed based on the severity of one’s skin condition. The final step, Step 3 (Protect) protects the skin and prevents the recurrence of skin ailments and is deemed the most important practice in basic skincare.
My review:
Early this year, I started breaking out due to hormonal imbalance. Also, starting a new job and sleeping at odd hours further threw my balance over the edge and I can safely say, besides the occasional zit before this, my skin was at its worst ever. I’m talking uncontrollable acne that wouldn’t go away no matter what I used or tried.
So I decided to give Derma-Rx a go when the opportunity presented itself. I had a skin consultation with Dr Jason who asked me questions about my lifestyle, sleeping habits and stress levels. After diagnosing my skin, Dr Jason prescribed a course or oral antibiotics and steroids to ease the swelling along with a complete range of Derma-Rx skincare regime. The doctors at DRx gave me a thorough analysis of my skin and having seen quite a few dermatologists, I can reassuringly say that this clinic is on top of my list. The fact that they also make their own products demonstrates an in depth knowledge of product formulation and skin compatibility.
I was prescribed the Foaming Cleanser, Milk Cleanser (makeup remover), Toner, Comedone Formula, Blemish Formula, Hydrator, SPF 30 Liposomal Sunscreen and the Anti-Blemish Mask.
The Milk Cleanser and Foaming Cleanser –
Upon the first use, after double cleansing and toning, I instantly felt a difference and I kid you not. I know it sounds incredibly hard to believe but my skin felt different. It was thoroughly clean and the products did an amazing job in removing the dead skin cells on the surface of my skin. After every wash, my skin felt rejuvenated without any tightness or dryness and it was soft and supple. The best part was, a little goes a long way.
Comedone Formula and Blemish Formula –
I use these two products after toning and although they might come in a small bottle, one tiny pump was all I needed to cover my entire face. The Comedone Formula helps dissolve and soften comedones as well as prevents new ones from forming. The Blemish Formula on the other hand helps reduce breakouts and clears up blemishes. So before you let the rather hefty price tag dissuade you, these products really get the work done with a small amount and the last for about 3 months or so, which by then, you should notice significant improvements.
Sunblock and Hydrator –
With Derma-Rx, I find that the products are potent but never in a harsh way as they are formulated with natural ingredients. The rule of thumb when using DermaRX products is to always use sunblock, as AHAs are a main feature in some their ingredients. AHAs increase sun sensitivity but that aside, you should still be using sunscreen everyday whether it rains or shines.
I use the Hydrator at night and what is fabulous about this Hydrator is the lightweight, watery texture that glides on your skin upon application. It’s so gentle you can use it on the eye area and it doesn’t leave a sticky feeling afterwards.
Anti-Blemish Mask –
This award-winning mask is simply incredible. I’ve been using this two to three times a week and it really clears out any congestion. You can also use it as an overnight spot treatment if you have a huge unexpected zit. I love the cooling sensation on my skin as well as the camphor scent.
Verdict:
I was incredibly pleased that my hyper sensitive skin did not react to the any of the products and I continued to use them religiously twice a day, except for the mask which I used two to three times a week.
After three weeks, my acne subsided tremendously and I had no more flare ups, just the occasionally zit here and there during that time of the month. My skin was less oily and surprisingly, more hydrated. The problem I find with a lot of anti-blemish products out there in the market, it’s inhibits your oil production to the point of drying out your skin which in return, might cause more acne as your sebaceous glands go into an overproduction of sebum. I also returned to the clinic for a follow up consultation and had my skin checked, this time by Dr Chiam. She recommended the Alpha Beta Gel, a light, peeling agent for night use to help slough off my dead skin cells which I only use at night.
I’m happy to report that since my review, I’ve gone back to the DRx Clinic & Medispa to purchase three products soon after they ran out because a) they seem to work really well on my skin and b) I just can’t live without them. To sum up my experience with the DRx Clinic and Derma-Rx products, I would highly recommend DRx if you’ve been wanting to visit a good dermatologist you can trust along with the added advantage of a tailored skincare regime that’s formulated in-house.
