Whoa!
Britain’s Center for Process Innovation has revealed the concept for a windowless plane, a design that’s visually stunning and just as efficient.
The exterior of the plane would be made of transparent, high-definition screens complete with cameras, allowing passengers to switch to views of the outside world by simply tapping on the screen or moving their eyes. The panels could also be used to track the plane’s path or access other forms of entertainment.
Dr. Jon Helliwell said, “So you could have a display next to a seat if you wanted it; you could have a blank area next to a seat if you wanted it; you would have complete flexibility as to where you put [the panel screens]. You could put screens on the back of the seats in the middle and link them to the same cameras.”
This makes the plane a lot lighter, reducing fuel consumption and the cost to make as well as board the aircraft.
For every one percent of weight reduced, 0.75 percent of fuel can be saved.
The screens would be made of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), which produce light when electricity is supplied. OLEDs are lighter and more energy efficient than traditional displays, but they have to be made flexible and durable for the concept to be brought to life.
Helliwell expects windowless planes to be available within 10 years.
