We recently had the pleasure of interviewing local singing group, Back2Basixx, which is made up of B, Christian, Kyle G., Daryll and Devon C. Known for their very soulful singing and bringing back A capella, we decided to get to know these guys a little better.
Tell us more about Back2Basixx.
All in all, we’re just five guys that love music and can’t imagine doing anything else.
What makes Back2Basixx stand out from all the other local acts?
There are tonnes of good local acts in the scene, Kelly Siew, Ray Cheong, An Honest Mistake, Kelvin Yeang and The Blues. All of them have their own defining quality that makes them stand out. I think for us, it’s because you don’t see any other vocal harmony groups around. We seem to be the only 5 guys on the scene doing it, to my knowledge at least. Of course there is this nostalgic throwback to the 90s boyband craze for many people who see us and grew up in the 90s. But mostly, I believe it is because we’re just ourselves on stage. If you’ve hung out with us before, you would know, we are in person exactly as we are on stage. Just a collision of 5 different personalities.
What has been the most gratifying thing about being musicians?
I think simply that we get to play music. That’s truly a blessing to be honest and of course having the fans appreciate our work.
Do you guys consider yourselves lucky in a sense that you work well together as a band? Because you hear about other bands that have major drama.
Haha, so far so good. Yes, we are very fortunate and we’re really close knit especially since we all grew up together. We can’t speak for other bands and their drama but for us but we’ve managed to elude it.
Do you guys write original pieces together?
Yes we do actually. We’ve just completed our first original song Sayangku and will be show casing it at our upcoming shows Unplugged at Interlude on the 16th of October and at No Black Tie on the 21st of October. Yes, it’s a Malay song but next song will definitely be an English song. We feel it’s important to cater to both languages since we are Malaysian after all.
Which song is your all time favourite to perform as a band?
We’re huge Boyz II Men fans. The vocal harmonies in their songs are arranged beautifully. So, naturally it would be any Boyz II Men songs. Particularly “I’ll Make Love To You” cause it was the first song we sang together and practiced relentlessly to make tight.
Would you consider yourselves a boyband?
Err, no! We are manband! An R&B vocal ensemble to be exact but yeah, I mean essentially we’re kinda, maybe, could be considered a boy band. Whatever! We have chest hair okay! (Laughs) Honestly people can categorize us under any label, we really don’t mind. Essentially we just like singing in harmony together and we hope they enjoy it.
Where will Back2Basixx be in five years?
Honestly, we’re just taking it as it comes. Step by step. We put in as much hard work as we can and do our best at every opportunity presented to us but if we had to say, in 5 years from now we’d hope to be picking up of 2nd or 3rd AIM award or maybe even an international award.
What does Back2Basixx have planned for the rest of the year?
Most definitely focusing on finishing up the recording of our single and getting out there on the radios and just generally marketing it as much as we can.
Being musicians, do you guys come across groupies?
Err yes, occasionally. But none have thrown their panties at us on stage yet. (Laughs)
Catch Back2Basixx on October 16th 2014 (9PM) at Unplugged @ Interlude and October 21st 2014 (9PM) at No Black Tie.
