Most of us don’t really know what to do with our unworn and old intimates – if you don’t throw them away, the other option is to simply bury them at the back of your lingerie drawer. Am I right?
A bra is perhaps one of the most important items for a lady and it’s also something we take for granted. While most of us find a reason to go bra shopping to match that new dress or sheer top, there are those out there who are not that fortunate, so we learned at Neubodi’s Pink Ensemble Party yesterday.
To date, there are 27 million men, women and children who are trafficked into slavery and 80% are women and girls, who fall victim to the sex trade. Those who are saved usually end up with nothing but the clothes they are wearing, which explains the significance of bras and other intimates. Also, second-hand bras are highly sought after in third world countries.
This year, Neubodi collaborates with Uplift Malaysia to collect second hand bras for underprivileged women to help them transition into a slavery- and prostitution-free life. Some women even sell these second-hand bras to help them earn a steady income of USD3-5 a day, five times the minimum wage in their country.
In conjunction with breast cancer awareness month in October, Neubodi is working closely with the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA) to educate women about the importance of wearing the right bra and conducting breast self-examinations every month. During this period, RM1 will be donated to BCWA for every new bra purchased.
This campaign runs from 25 September till 2 November and Neubodi hopes to raise RM10,000 for both BCWA and Uplift Malaysia. The total bras collected will be sorted out, packed and shipped personally by Neubodi Malaysia and Uplift Malaysia’s personnels to the safe houses and villages in Kathmandu, Nepal, with official airline sponsor, Air Asia X.
