The ice bucket challenge is making rounds on the Internet and if you don’t already know what this whole trend’s about, let us fill you in. Sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, this dare involves dumping a bucket of ice water over a person’s head and donating to the ALS Association in the United States. Inspired by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), this disease is most often known as the Lou Gehrig’s disease and affects nerve cells in the brain as well as the spinal cord. An ALS patient would experience the disability for the brain to initiate and control muscle movement in the body. This condition deteriorates progressively, causing the patient to become totally paralysed in the later stages.

So, how is the ice bucket challenge related to ALS? The idea of this challenge is that the person nominated has to complete the task within 24 hours from the time they were nominated, otherwise, the participant has to donate money to the ALS Association. This was of course criticised by many, hence, it was later that the participants nominated for the challenge decided to make donations anyway after completing the task.
