Raya Will Be Dry and Hazy This Year

Looks like we’re going to be facing a very dry and hazy Hari Raya this year as very little rain is expected in the coming days. The reason for this is due to the emergence of three continuous typhoons in the region – Neoguri, Rammasun and the current Typhoon Matmo, said Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) spokesman Dr Hisham Mohd Anip.

“The typhoons drag moisture from the air in the surrounding areas, leading to the dry spell,” said Dr Hisham yesterday.

Typhoon Rammasun recently hit China and the Philippines, which left 112 fatalaties, and Typhoon Matmo is reported to be on course to hit Taiwan.

Dr Hisham said that even though the typhoon was not a threat to Malaysia, it may cause high waves. He also added, “The current hot weather is also compounded by the haze from Sumatra in Indonesia,”

According to a check, which was done on the Meteorological Service Singapore website, it’s been revealed that since July 16 the amount of hotspots in Sumatra has risen. 200 hotspots were discovered on the island, yesterday alone.

Dr Hisham also mentioned that Malaysia may be facing a longer period of dry weather due to there being a chance of another typhoon hitting the region, if it forms. “The period could stretch on for another two weeks,” he added.

As of 11AM yesterday, the air quality around the country took a dip, and five areas have been deemed unhealthy due to the readings.

Some of the affected areas included Port Klang, Kuala Selangor, Seberang Jaya 2 in Perai, Seri Manjung in Perak and Kg Air Putih in Taiping, which all have unhealthy levels of between 100 and 200.
