Ever since the BB cream came about, all eyes have been on the beauty scene in Korea and there is no wondering why. Known as the beauty innovator in Asia, Korea possesses a reputation for developing top-notch skincare and makeup, providing women of all walks with gorgeous skin. Fairly new in the market is a cutting-edge BB product, the BB cover cushion, and I believe that Laneige is the first brand to come up with such a product. I haven’t tried the Laneige BB Cushion, but another Korean beauty label, PureHeal’s, has developed something very similar and I would be reviewing the PureHeal’s Caviar 27 Cover Cushion for you today. Find out more below!
This is all I’ve got from the website and product packaging because everything is in Korean!

When I first received the product, I was very sceptical as to what it actually is and what it can do for my skin. After removing it from the foil packaging, I opened the compact and felt the sponge applicator that the product comes with. The instruction said to apply the product using this sponge applicator, so I had to find out what’s so special about it. The sponge applicator is ultra soft and feels very different compared to most sponge puffs I’ve used.
I opened the lid on the compact and it unveiled the cover cushion, which pretty much looks like a sponge soaked in the actual product. With the sponge applicator provided, I press it onto the cover cushion a couple of times and it extracts just the right amount of product to be applied on the skin. The instruction also said to rub the product onto the skin in circular motions before patting it into the skin, so that’s what I did.
The first thing I noticed was that this cover cushion is super light in colour, even for my fair and pale skin! This is definitely not a translucent product because the coverage is so heavy that it conceals your natural skin colour completely. I tried blending it out into nothing so that it would resemble more of my natural skin tone, but it didn’t work. It definitely conceals well and covers all the redness around my nose and on my chin, but it looks very unnatural. The website also claims that this product is buildable, but I don’t think there is a need to build up the product on your skin if the first layer is already so heavy in coverage.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that this cover cushion made my skin look extremely dewy. I understand that this is the look most Korean females would like, but it definitely did not look good on me and it made me look very greasy. As I looked into the mirror and turned my head from side to side, I could see the light bouncing off of different areas on my face and trust me, it’s the opposite of the glowy look you’d get with a highlighter.
I quickly took a facial tissue and pressed it onto my skin to blot off any excess oil, and then used a face powder to mattify my skin. One thing that I really liked about this product is its staying power and how it controls oils very well. After going about my day, I didn’t have to reapply my face powder at all. Again, I just used a facial tissue and pressed it onto my skin to blot off any excess oil. This product didn’t make me look greasy midday, and the cover cushion actually helped my face powder, bronzer and blush adhere really well onto my skin. Also, it didn’t oxidise into a horrible colour and it actually looks better after a couple of hours.
This product is still pretty new to me and I haven’t gotten used to it yet. With that being said, it is interesting and I kind of like how it works on my skin. However, I don’t think this cover cushion comes in any other shade and it definitely wouldn’t work on anyone with a dark skin tone. I believe that many other beauty brands will follow suit soon in developing more products like this, but they should come up with more shades as well as make their product less dewy and more lightweight. It definitely is a good concept, but it needs to be tweaked to be more flexible and wearable by most women.
PureHeal’s Caviar 27 Cover Cushion is available at all Sephora outlets in Malaysia for RM98.
