What’s in a name?

A name can either make or break you. Like a product or service, branding is very important and it helps shape your personality and the way the rest of the world perceives you. Remember the days where you used to read the “Sweet Valley Twins” series? Between Jessica and Elizabeth, which one comes off as the bubblier personality to you? While Jessicas are a dime a dozen (there are eight “Jessica”s in my Facebook friends list!), there are some uncommon ones of course.

Just last week, New Zealand announced a ban on weird kids’ names to avoid long term trauma on the kids as they get older. Unlike normal people like you and me, the rich and famous are high on the quirky names well, just because they can.

1. Harper Seven Beckham

With names like Romeo, Brooklyn and Cruz, we didn’t think there’d be anymore surprises from this gorgeous family of five until little baby Harper came along. Named after Victoria’s favourite author Harper Lee who wrote “To Kill A Mockingbird” and David’s lucky number seven in football.

2. Kal-el Coppola

Nicholas Cage’s son. Now this one takes the cake. Kal-El is the birth name of our famous Clark Kent aka
“Superman”. Well, looks like the kid has a lot to live up to.

3. Pilot Inspektor

Jason Lee, the title character in “My Name is Earl” and the voice of Syndrome in “The Incredibles” along with wife Beth Riesgraf have named their kid just that. It’d be strange if he didn’t end up in the airforce don’t you think?

4. Sage Moonblood

Ah Rocky must’ve been high when he chose this name. Sage is the son of Sylvester Stallone and Sasha Czack. They have another son called Seargoh. Pretty strange for parents with seemingly ordinary names.

5. Kyd

David Duchovny of “X-Files’ fame and Tea Leoni name their kid the obvious. How..creative? Groundbreaking?

6. Peaches Honeyblossom, Fifi Trixabelle & Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily

Singer Bob Geldof has definitely flexed all of his creative muscles in naming his kids. With names like those, you’d mistaken them as little pixies straight out of the Disney channel. Pretty cute name if you’re under 6 years of age but as a 24 year old, these often get relegated to stripper names.

7. Destry

For someone who makes blockbusters for a living, Steven Spielberg should really have left child naming to his scriptwriters but perhaps it has something to do with his love to destroy and blow up stuff in his films. Hmm…

8. Tu Morrow

Rob Morrow from the TV show “Numb3rs” obviously likes puns. Okay so wordplay is cute (like Steve Kok for example) but this wins in the pun category. Every kid out there will be going home from school and telling their mum, “I have a friend called tomorrow!” The problem is, this kind of humour doesn’t die out so quickly.

Most parents want their children to be unique and seen as special by the public as they are regarded by their parents, and a unheard of name is one of the sure ways to accomplish this goal. The thing with names is that you may want to consider the potential harassment your kid may go through and you better make sure its something they can spell and pronounce right eh?
