The legendary singer, would like for those who use religious reasons to go against same-sex marriages to take another look at their New Testament.
Elton John told Sky News‘ Dermot Murnaghan, “The church hierarchy, the traditionalists, might be up in arms about it but times have change.” “If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that is what the church should be about.”
Elton and his longtime partner, David Furnish have two sons together and are looking to get hitched next year in London, since same-sex marriages are not legal in England.
The “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” singer, who chose Lady Gaga to be the godmother to both his kids, also stated that he finds plenty of rules such as Catholic priests being forced to never engage in anything sexual and gay clergy members not being allowed to get married is just a bunch of “old and stupid things.”
However, Elton sees the silver lining in the archaic cloud, calling Pope Francis “wonderful.”
The singer said that the reigning leader of the Roman Catholic Church, “He’s excited me so much by his humanity. He’s taken everything down to the humility of faith. He’s stripped it down to the bare bones and said it’s all basically about love and inclusiveness. That has to be encouraged by the Church of England as well.”
Elton and his partner’s plans to get married this year had to be delayed, even though it is not legal in England due to the fact that they are already in a civil partnership.
“However, when we do do,” Elton guaranteed, “it will be very quiet and off the cuff—we had our big shebang when we had our civil union.”
