Here’s the recent update regarding the 34-year-old British charity worker, Gareth Huntley who has gone missing in Tioman Island since last week.

A body was found in Pulau Tioman and the identity has yet to be confirmed. The police are awaiting DNA test results to conclusively identify the deceased man.

Pahang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Sharifuddin Ab Ghani said the cause of death was also undetermined after a post-mortem was conducted yesterday at the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan morgue here.

He added that the pathologist would need more time to continue investigations to see if the body is that of missing Briton Gareth David Huntley.

“The DNA samples collected from the body have been sent to the Chemistry Department for examination. We expect the results to be known in two days’ time,” SDCP Sharifuddin said at the hospital.

He said hospital staff had also collected a blood sample from Huntley’s mother Janet Southwell for DNA comparison.

Southwell flew in from Pulau Tioman by helicopter and arrived at the hospital at about 11am. She was accompanied by Huntley’s girlfriend Kit Natariga and British High Commission representative Karen Song.

Southwell appeared calm, but she left in a police car without speaking to the press at about 2pm.

SDCP Sharifuddin said Southwell had not viewed the body yet and would stay here to facilitate investigations.

“Even though Huntley’s mother looked morose, she is prepared to accept any eventuality,” he said.

He added that the search and rescue operation for Huntley had been halted, but some personnel would remain in Kampung Juara on the island to collect evidence.

“We have found an iPhone believed to belong to Huntley near the site where the body was discovered. However, his personal identification documents have yet to be found,” he said.
