If you’ve ever been to Penang and if you’re a fan of nasi kandar, then the island’s famous Nasi Kandar Line Clear is an establishment that needs no introduction.
Due to a long running family dispute over its ownership and rotation of management, the future of Line Clear isn’t so clear anymore.
The management rotation dispute – which has been ongoing since the 1980s – has forced the Penang Island Municipal Council to “issue an ultimatum to the four partners, all of whom are cousins,” according to The Star.
Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakeer, 64, who is currently running the side-lane outlet in Penang Road, does not have a licence to operate the business, which is in the name of his three cousins.
MPPP licensing director Azman Sirun has given the family two weeks to settle their dispute, otherwise the authorities will “seize the stall and other items in the eatery,” Azman said at a press conference yesterday.
Azman said the outlet’s business licence was under T. Abdul Latiff, Sahubarali China Mohd Hanibah and Pathumah Iskandar, who were all present at the press conference. They claim that Abdul Hamid, the current manager had breached an agreement over the timeline of the business operation. He is trying to claim the business as his own, according to Latiff.
Latiff’s claims were refuted by Abdul Hamid who said, “I will not budge. If they continue to dispute this, I am ready to go to court.”
