A policeman in Ipoh who was supposed to get married this Sunday died after he was knocked off his motorcycle by robbers he was chasing.
L/Kpl Mohd Azuan Abdullah (pic below), 25, ended up in a ditch and died on the spot due to the impact from the crash at 10am near Alor Pongsu yesterday.
Perak police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said Mohd Azuan and another policeman, both with the Kerian district motorcycle patrol unit, were responding to a distress call.
“They had received the call (on their radios) about a cigarette heist that had happened 30 minutes earlier,” he said.
The two police officers then spotted a Toyota Wish and a Honda Civic that were reported to have been used by the robbers during the heist and gave chase.
“During the pursuit, the driver of the Honda Civic knocked into Mohd Azuan,” said SDC Acryl Sani.
Police later found Toyota Wish burnt at a banana plantation near the border of Lunas, Kedah, and North Seberang Perai, Penang, some 60km from the spot where Mohd Azuan was killed.
North Seberang Perai OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said police were monitoring the area for the robbers.
Mohd Azuan, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday, was to marry his 24-year-old fiancee in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
His father, Abdullah Mahmood, 49, said he last saw his son about three months ago before the engagement ceremony in Kuala Kurau, Perak.
“I did not expect that it would be the last time I would see him alive. I could not attend the engagement because the place was too far,” he said at the family home in Johor.
Mohd Azuan will be buried at the Batu 22 Kulai Muslim cemetery in Johor at 10am today.
