We’ve shared with you the complete winners list, talked about some awesome selfies taken during the prestigious night and dished on some of our favourite gowns on the red carpet. Now, let’s recap on a few of the best and worst moments during this year’s Oscars at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. Ready? Let’s roll!
BEST MOMENTS
1. When Ellen DeGeneres initiated the most epic selfie of all time
Talk about a star-studded photo! Ellen invited Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum and Jared Leto to join in for an epic selfie. This photo also broke the Twitter record for most retweets and it even made the social networking platform go haywire.
2. When social media went nuts once Lupita Nyong’o stepped out of her car
The actress’ fashion hasn’t disappointed all awards season. Who can forget her bright red Ralph Lauren cape dress she wore to the Golden Globes? Once again, everyone was aflutter over her dusty blue Prada gown right as she stepped out onto the red carpet.
3. When Ellen worked the room and served pizza
After joking that the Oscars was like The Hunger Games, Ellen walked around to distribute slices of pizza to the stars. Jennifer Lawrence, Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and more helped themselves to a slice, as Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey helped to serve. She made it a point to serve one star in particular and she went, “Kerry Washington is pregnant, she needs some.”
4. When Pharrell Williams rocked out to Happy and his signature hat
Pharrell performed Happy and got the audience to shimmy, literally with Lupita Nyong’o, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams in the front row. Of course, he had on his now-signature hat, in which Ellen then nabbed it and used it as a collection hat to cover the costs of the pizzas she ordered mid-show.
5. When Matthew McConaughey called himself his own “hero”
Matthew won his first ever Oscar for his lead role in Dallas Buyers Club. He gets major points for capping the season off with his signature “all right, all right, all right” line, but his somehow meandering Best Actor acceptance speech was delightful. He also called himself his own “hero”. He said, “My hero’s always going to be me ten years away.” He added, “I’m never going to be him, and I’m fine with that because it keeps me someone to keep chasing.”
WORST MOMENTS
1. When American Hustle didn’t win anything
American Hustle entered the Oscars with a ton of nominations, but the cast and crew left with zero trophies. Seems like it was a somber after-party for them, but well, at least they were nominated. Isn’t it such a great movie though?
2. When Jennifer Lawrence tripped. Again
Remember the time J. Law fell during the Oscars last year when she was on her way up on stage to collect her Oscar? Well, she did it again. We’re pretty sure she can’t keep her balance, as this time, she tripped over an orange cone which was clearly in her way. Oh well, we still love you, Jen!
3. When Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t win Best Actor
It’s impossible for us to wrap our heads around the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio lost to Matthew McConaughey. Once again, he didn’t win the trophy, despite being nominated for five Oscars in the past 20 years. Fans of the Wolf of Wall Street star took to Twitter to express their empathy and the hashtag #poorLeo began trending. Better luck next time, #poorLeo!
4. When John Travolta failed to pronounce Idina Menzel’s name
Though he starred in a few massive movies which made history, John misspoke when presenting the singer from the year’s biggest music movie, Frozen, and he introduced Idina Menzel as “Adele Nazeem.” Sad to say, Ellen DeGeneres only did a wee bit better, calling the singer “Eye-dee-nuh” instead.
5. When Cate Blanchett told Julia Roberts to #suckit
“Hashtag #suckit.” – This is what Cate Blanchett said to Julia Roberts during her award acceptance speech for Best Actress. We think it’s hilarious and it was clearly a joke, but that would’ve caused some serious stink-eye. Despite that, the Blue Jasmine actress’ speech was really quite amazing.
