If you’re a lover of Chinese bacon and all things porcine, feast your eyes on this one-of-a-kind piece of property!
Introducing, the Bacon Apartment!
Taken in Wuhan, China, this is a photo of what looks like a butcher working out of his own apartment, or just some guy with a questionable appetite.
As you can see, this humble property has heaps of raw pork hanging on the balcony and windows. Apparently, all of that is pork being cured for consumption and it is known as la rou, or Chinese bacon.
Consisting of pork belly, the meat is marinated in some sauce, and then is smoked or baked, or even exposed to sunlight, giving it a unique flavour.
First off, as delicious as any form of bacon can be, this is unfortunately very unhygienic. Apart from the bacteria floating about in the air particles, all that hanging meat is also exposed to exhaust fumes from automobiles, and even bird poop!
And speaking of birds, how is it that there aren’t any birds flocking around all that pork?!
Word of advice – make it a habit to question how, or in this case, where your la rou is cured.
