Zakwan Anuar has built a reputation for creating clothes combining sleek minimalism, masculinity and elegance – something which he stays true with as witnessed at the presentation of his Spring/Summer 2014 collection early January 2014.
With the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) being chosen as the venue, Zakwan showed 29 looks, inspired by his various European travels in 2013. An avid traveller, he saw a darker side of the region and his senses were greatly triggered by the different landscapes and the characters of the people he met.
“The idea of people having clothes that are so specific to the season has changed. There are no absolutes anymore. As the collection grew in front of my eyes, I saw how dark it was, which is contrary to the season. But what I also saw, was this amazing combination of earth mineral colors such as the silver, gold, the richness of bronze, and of course with black as the base of everything. In line with this, I’ve also incorporated the color of the ocean, the mud, the forest and the sunset,” enthused Zakwan.
For this collection, he has worked with materials and fabrics which are completely new to him, including stretchable cotton, jacquard, high gloss fabric (resulting in the glittery and shimmery effect), silk and summer wool. Influenced by his sartorial world-view, he dedicated this collection to “anyone who loves fashion – those with a strong appreciation for style and creativity”.
Adding an extra flair to the show, Zakwan also formed collaboration with Maatin Shakir, a shoe and bag designer and Goran Kling, accessory designer.
“My collaboration with Maatin and Goran is truly a natural progression. We all share the same aesthetics – modern simplicity with an edge, and the last thing I’m interested in is looking like I have spent too much time trying to achieve a look. It has to be pragmatic but indulgent at the same time. With every season, I try to incorporate different things and hit sharper notes with my design. My father has taught me well to learn from my mistakes in order to constantly improve myself. I hope that you have enjoyed the collection as much as I have enjoyed my journey in bringing it to you,” said the 23-year-old designer.
