There were countless speculations about Anna Wintour putting Girls writer and actress Lena Dunham on the cover of Vogue, and all the rumors were true after all.
Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, Dunham graces the February 2014 cover of Vogue in a Twiggy-esque shoot, donning an adorable polka-dot coat. The spread was inspired by Dunham’s character in her TV show Girls, with her on-screen boyfriend Adam Driver appearing in many of the shots. Even her dog made it into the magazine.
Looking absolutely gorgeous in the spread, Dunham dons a couple of high-fashion pieces, including a black and white feather dress by Alexander McQueen.
Dunham prides herself on being her body being different from what is considered “desirable” by the media, and Vogue just happens to be known for putting slim and slender stars on the cover. As Nathan Heller says in Dunham’s Vogue spread:
“She’s become a kind of spokesperson for young women who want to express themselves stylishly but with personal whimsy, and a vocal critic of the stereotype that fashion belongs only to a tiny group of superslender people terrified of breaking rules. For almost as long as Dunham’s work has been in the public eye, she’s spoken openly and often about her body type, pointing out that not every strong and enviable woman on the air must resemble a runway model.”
Hats off to one of the leading fashion magazines for finally putting a “normal” shaped woman on the cover! Read the full article on Vogue.
