Here’s another good reason to stay in bed longer with your other half: Researches have shown that sex can help grow more brain cells.
The Atlantic recently reported that two different teams from Maryland and South Korea have run tests with mice and rats showing that there was improvement in mental performance after their sexual activities.
The team from the University of Maryland experimented with middle-aged rats that “showed signs of improved cognitive function and hippocampal function” after engaging in sex. Seoul’s Konkuk University also showed similar results in mice: “Sexual interaction could be helpful for buffering adult hippocampal neurogenesis and recognition memory function against the suppressive actions of chronic stress.”
However, there’s no point having more brain cells if you don’t maintain them. Lifestyle habits such as consuming alcohol, eating unhealthy food, smoking cigarettes and experiencing stress will make you lose your brain cells faster – so sex alone won’t help there. A psychologist at the Center for Collaborative Neuroscience at Rutgers University suggested combining sexual activities with mental training to “have the best of both worlds” – you’ll develop new brain cells and keep them alive.
Oh, and you might want to tell your man to lay off watching too much porn – a different study showed that even short viewing of pornography will disrupt your working memory. So more real sex, and less of the fake stuff.
