In welcoming the mighty stallion as it gallops into the lunar New Year, Tesco Malaysia has launched “Ong Mali”, which is a special campaign developed to highlight Tesco’s key product offers, specials and rewards for Chinese New Year, and to help the underprivileged during the festive season.
Tesco’s customers, guests, media and colleagues were treated to an action-packed lion dance performance during the launch event. Guests were in for a pleasant surprise when a horse carrying local actress Gan Mei Yan trotted into the event space, accompanied by actor Jack Lim and Jeff Chin, the casts of Ah Beng: Mission Impossible and several Tesco shopping trolleys filled to the brim with Chinese New Year goodies.
“CNY is a very special time for us at Tesco. I would like to bring the good cheers by announcing to you that prosperity indeed begins at Tesco. Our month-long CNY Ong Mali Campaign offers great promos, treats and exciting events that bring together customers, families and the community,” said Georg Fischer, CEO of Tesco Malaysia.
Tesco has invested over RM40 million to keep prices low throughout the CNY period. A total of RM7 million was invested recognising the importance of fresh food during the festive period. Some of these popular fresh food items are mandarin oranges, ngaku, prawn, chicken, broccoli and cauliflowers. Tesco also takes the lead in keeping prices low for key line beverages in particular carbonated drinks, Asian drinks and beer.
For some items, Tesco has strived hard to retain last year’s pricing, if not lower as compared with 2013. For example, the Yu Shang plate is sold at RM6.88, which is the same price as 2013. Good news to customers who are organizing parties, as the banquet table is now priced at RM46.88, which is RM2 cheaper than the year before.
From now until the 17th of February 2014, customers will also get to enjoy daily “Ong Mali” offers for key CNY products. These attractive deals give customers great variety and offers from daily essentials, fresh food items including mandarin oranges, ngaku, cookies and confectioneries to non-food items like housewares, home décor and gift selections. Festive hampers are also available at Tesco from as low as RM38.
Tesco’s Grocery Home Shopping (GHS) customers may have a surprise delivery by the Ah Beng movie cast when they place their orders online between 4th to 26th January 2014! Tesco Clubcard members who spend RM200 and above via GHS from now until 12th January 2014 will be entitled to participate in a contest to win Ah Beng: Mission Impossible Gala Premier tickets.
Tesco is also partnering with Astro Radio for a nationwide radio in-store contest – Ong Mali Hunt. Participants will have to tune in to MY FM, MIX FM or Melody FM to receive clues and there will be RM188,000 worth of vouchers to be won over 21 days, with 16 winners a day. In conjunction with this partnership, Tesco Malaysia also introduced the latest horse merchandise soft toy set called Astro Special Mah Li (twin pack). Only 7,000 sets are available and they are exclusively sold at Tesco stores at RM48.88.
Customers who shop at Tesco will also stand a chance to win movie tickets to the Ah Beng: Mission Impossible Gala Premier. There are 3,000 Ah Beng: Mission Impossible Gala Premier tickets to be given away. Customers may also get the chance to meet and greet the Ah Beng cast at selected Tesco malls!
In addition to that, look out for the “Ong Mali on Wheels” that is going around nationwide to give away over RM80,000 worth of tenant vouchers sponsored by Burger King, KFC, King’s Confectionery , Pak Hailam, Sushi King and The Chicken Rice Shop. Customers who are in for some fun, are also encouraged to participate in the Tesco Miss Cheong Sam ‘Contests on Wheels’ at the same time.
Apart from the great prices and deals, it is also Tesco’s tradition to celebrate the festive season with the community. Tesco is giving back a total of RM260,000 this Chinese New Year to the underprivileged.
Three different charity homes including Rumah K.I.D.S., Beautiful Gate Centre and the Selangor Cheshire Home were invited to the Ong Mali launch celebrations at Tesco Kepong on 7th of January. They were treated to the traditional “loh sang” toss and Tesco Malaysia also donated shopping trolleys filled with Chinese New Year goodies to these charity homes. Each charity home also received RM5,000 Tesco Gift Vouchers for their CNY shopping and their residents each received an “Ang Pow” worth RM50.
Additionally, Tesco is organizing the Ong Mali Charity Ang Pow Fundraising drive. Customers in Penang are encouraged to donate a minimum of RM3 in return for a packet of the Ong Mali Ang Pow packet cum Auspicious Door Hanger from the 16th Jan – 14th Feb 2014. Tesco aims to raise at least RM60,000 for this initiative for charity.
Finally, Tesco Malaysia will also be sponsoring 15 poor families to a CNY dinner in the Central and Southern regions of Malaysia to foster family togetherness for the needy. Additionally, Tesco is sponsoring the underprivileged homes to attend a Chinese New Year Spring’s Street Party, themed Season of Hopes and Prosperity, which is an event to be held on Presgrave Street, Penang.
