As we embrace a brand new year, we’re sharing with you some skincare resolutions you can make to improve your skin and make your complexion brighter, cleaner and clearer. We know that it can be a little difficult to commit and stay disciplined when it comes to skincare, but it would make the biggest difference in the long run and you will be glad that you’ve taken the time to properly care for your skin. To take up this challenge, keep reading for some skincare resolutions we have come up with!
1. Wash your face before bed – Even if you’ve just been hanging around in your home, make sure to wash your face and follow up with skincare before you hit the sack. We cannot stress how important it is to take proper care of your skin, even if you’ve just turned 18. How you treat your skin would reflect on how it looks and how it ages as we grow older.
2. Use eye cream – Your eye area is extremely delicate as the skin is 10 times finer than the skin on the rest of the face. Hence, it’s more prone to damage and will start showing signs of ageing quicker. You cannot use regular moisturisers because the eye area needs intense hydration and eye creams are specifically made for that purpose.
3. Know your skin type – Go to any skincare counters to get your skin tested. The last thing you want is to be using the wrong products that are not meant for your skin type. For instance, if you have sensitive skin, you should only be using extremely gentle products meant for sensitive skin. Any sort of harsh ingredients contained in some products would irritate your skin, causing redness, dry patches, itching and even a burning sensation.
4. Do not wear makeup to sleep – Make a vow to yourself and make sure that you never ever sleep with your makeup on, no matter how tired you are. The chemicals from the products you’ve used, dirt and gunk will get absorbed into your skin while you sleep so only allow your skin to suck up the good stuff.
5. Use a facial mask – Whether you use a sheet mask, clay mask or a gel mask, you should learn to pamper your skin at least once a week to restore hydration, deep cleanse the skin and provide it with the nutrients it needs. It would make a huge difference and you will find that your skin would be much softer, smoother, brighter and more moisturised.
6. Exfoliating is crucial – A facial scrub or a gentle exfoliator will do wonders for your skin by renewing the outer layer. Besides removing dead skin cells, exfoliating will also help with clogged pores, hyperpigmentation, blemished skin and dry skin. Your skin will also be smoother, softer and appear more glowy. Besides that, your makeup will apply much better too.
7. Don’t pick on your face – Your hands are filled with lots of bacteria, germs and dirt, and you certainly do not want filth transferred onto your skin, which can cause you to break out and irritate the skin. We know it’s really tempting, but try your best to keep your hands off your face at all costs.
8. Use sunblock – Even if you’re not planning to go out under the sun, always apply sunblock to protect your skin as the UV rays can cause wrinkles, fine lines, age spots as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. Make it a habit and do it religiously. You will thank us later in the years to come.
9. Do not tug on your skin – Whatever you do, try not to tug on your face. Any small movements or stretching in the skin will result in premature wrinkles and fine lines. The key is to be extremely gentle with your skin, especially if you’re removing your eye makeup. Leave the cotton pad soaked in makeup remover on your eyes for one minute before gently swiping the makeup off. Do not rub harshly.
10. Watch out for external stress – Pollution, air humidity and smoke can irritate your skin. Be very observant of these external stresses and make sure that you attend to your skin under these harsh conditions. For example, if you’re boarding a plane, the air will be extra dry. Hence, always carry a facial mist to rehydrate your skin when needed.
