Penangites are already feeling the pinch of the “inevitable” price hike that started after New Year’s day.

According to The Star, hawkers are already increasing food prices since the prices of ingredients and other relevant items have gone up. A char koay teow hawker said that he had to increase the prices as he was not able to afford the rising costs of living any more.

In Penang, each plate of char koay teow is now priced at RM3.50 (normal), RM4 (with egg) and RM4.50 (with duck egg). This shows an increase of 50 sen per plate from a week ago.

“One kilo of prawn now costs RM30 compared to RM18 in April. A bottle of soya sauce is also 50 sen higher since early last year, from RM5.50 to RM6,” the hawker said.

In the Klang Valley area, a number of coffee shops are also beginning to raise the prices for drinks by up to 20 sen. Hawkers have also raised the prices of their food by up to 50 sen.

With the price hike on all our basic necessities, Malaysians will have to be smart consumers in finding ways to live comfortably without having to tighten our budgets any further.

You can still enjoy without breaking the bank, just check out these tips that’ll teach you how to have fun, even on a budget. If you’re worried about sacrificing style, this article will transform you into a budget-savvy fashionista.
