We’ve once discussed self etiquette in our list of Instagram crimes, but are world leaders free to make these mistakes at such crucial hours?
While leaders of the world gathered to mourn the death of Nelson Mandela at the memorial service, US President Barack Obama along with British Prime Minister David Cameron posed for a picture with Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt.
While netizens were quick to criticize these leaders, some were more focused on the grim look US First Lady Michelle Obama had on her face. Seated next to the President Obama, the First Lady was obviously saddened by the death of Mandela. But she was probably displeased with her husband’s jolly behavior during the memorial service.
Although the First Lady had her mind focused on the occasion, the Internet was frenzied by her unimpressed look in comparison to the smiling world leaders next to her. Netizens have gone as far as to dubbing the situation a “soap opera”.
Soon after, the Obamas switched seats, with Michelle Obama seated next to the Danish prime minister. The Leader of the Free world looked ahead somberly, and when he got up to leave, Michelle was seen chatting with Thorning-Schmidt. It’s hard to tell if the ladies were having a civil argument, or if they’re just catching up for old times sake.
The memorial service of the former South African president, Nelson Mandela, was held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on December 10, 2013.
