If you’ve been following up with our KL Lookbook series, you’ll know that Kuala Lumpur is a melting pot of stylish women from all over town! Sadly, women who range from sizes UK12 and above are feeling a little intimidated by the ever-changing trends, and they’re finding it hard to stay in the scene without losing their sense of style. We gathered a bunch of beautiful and curvaceous plus-size women of all shape, sizes and colour to share their personal style tips!
Here’s what they have to say:
“Ironically, a lot of plus size women – despite being size-ably bigger – tend to hide in the background than to actually stand out in a crowd. Why? They are most probably lacking in confidence and instead of embracing their curvaceous identity, they choose to hide it. I know that it takes time to for self-conscious plus size women to slowly step out of the shadow, but a good start to that would be to add a pop of color or pattern to your daily outfit.
I personally wear a lot more monotones in my daily outfits but I will make sure to add a pop of color into the mix. Say you are wearing all-black – black skinny jeans and an oversized black top with one of those nice looking wedge-sneaker, also in black – you might want to throw a red shawl with skull patterns into the mix around your neck and put on a matte red lipstick too.
These are easy ways to stand out in the crowd and hopefully plus size women will slowly gain their confidence and start embracing the idea of being a unique plus size.”- Nazirah, 27 [See more of Nazirah’s style in our KL Lookbook]
“Wear whatever you want to wear and OWN it! If your belly is showing, let it show. It’s your body, and you don’t need to apologise for it” – Lidiana, 27
“I generally do not believe in “free size” clothing because clothing boils down to how it fits on your body, and this is really important for plus size women. We don’t want to look bigger than what we are by wearing something loose or feel uncomfortable by wearing something that’s too tight. It’s important to know your own shape and what style suits you the most, I took years to find out mine and I always feel safe when I put on a Fit & Flare dress. Also, always be confident no matter what size you are” – Jess Lee, 30
“Pick items that fit well. They don’t have to be skin tight but fitted well enough to accentuate curves and flatter your figure. Know your strong points and flaunt them! There are ways to hide tummies, thighs and arms but drowning yourself in oversized items won’t help because it will make you look sloppy, hefty and dowdy.” – Eliza, 27
“Our tip for the pretty ladies out there is to not shy away from color this festive season! Most would go for the usual blacks or navy blues (trust us, we love those rich dark colours too) but try a punch of colour – like a bright red number. It looks real flattering on most skin tones and does suit the festive season”. Jiar Hwei (Trendy Confessions)
“Style and fashion start with loving your body first. We all have our insecurities and we worry about telling us that we look ‘ugly’ or that the clothes we’re wearing are unflattering for our body. Once you are comfortable in your own skin, you’ll realize that it doesn’t matter what you wear! And this applies to every woman of every shape and size” – Loretta, 25
