In the entertainment industry, sex may sell but Jennifer Lawrence, who is popularly known as Katniss Everdeen from the The Hunger Games isn’t buying any of it.
The 23-year old actress opened up and spoke about the sexualization of young women such as Miley Cyrus on BBC Newsnight. “It is a part of the entertainment industry that sells,” she said. “For some disgusting reason, young sex sells even more,” she continued.
The 20-year-old twerking star’s most recent antics include smoking up on stage at the MTV EMAs which made headlines worldwide.
“It’s not really something that I worry about because I feel like everybody’s kind of got their own path,” Jennifer told BBC. “They have their own way of finding themselves and for some people that’s how they feel best, that’s how they feel sexy, that’s how they want to perform,” she added.
“I’m just saying, to each their own,” Jennifer said when the interviewer from BBC Newsnight, Zoe Conway mentioned about Miley’s performance during the MTV EMAs whereby she was twerking with a dwarf.
Jennifer believes that Katniss is a great role model for young girls because she thinks “it’s better to look strong and healthy” and said, “When we were doing the first The Hunger Games, it was a big discussion, ‘cause it’s called The Hunger Games – she’s from District 12, she’s obviously underfed, so she would be incredibly thin. But, I just kept saying, ‘We have the ability to control this image that young girls are going to be seeing.”
“Girls see enough of this body that we can’t imitate, that we’ll never be able to obtain, these unrealistic expectations, and this is gonna be their hero, and we have control over that,” she explained. Jennifer has once again showed us that she doesn’t have to get naked like Miley Cyrus to get noticed.
