So your big day is coming and of course you want to be the most beautiful version of yourself. Bridal make-up can be very tricky as you’ll need enough color to compensate for the whiteness of your dress, without going overboard. In an effort to help you look amazing and timeless in all your photographs, here are the bridal make-up dos and don’ts you should follow.
DOS
1. Apply make-up in natural light
Natural light will help show you if you have too much make-up on, or too little. You want to achieve the right amount without having your face look cake-y or too shiny. Set you make-up station as close as you can to your window where the sun shines.
2. Achieve a matte look
Skip the sunblock and go for a moisturizer that preps the skin for make-up or a mattifying formula. Sunblocks tend to “flash off” your make-up as it reflects too much light under flash photography, resulting in an over-exposed shot. Also set your concealer and foundation with sheer loose powder with a good powder puff as it helps reduce unwanted shine.
3. Define your eyebrows
A groomed pair of eyebrows will frame your face better, and help make you look more “present” during the evening. Instead of using a eyebrow pencil, define your eyebrows with a soft matte eyeshadow that matches the hair colour of your brows. Use a stiff angled brush to adjust you arch, and don’t forget flat white eyeshadow to highlight the arch.
4. Avoid trendy or bold make-up
Wedding make-up should be timeless and long lasting. Instead of a complicated look, go for a pretty flush by adding pop of color to your cheeks, rosy pink lips and a classic eye make-up look that comprises of a neutral hues, and waterproof eyeliner and mascara. Also emphasize the eyes by brightening any darkness under them with a corrector and concealer.
5. Get plenty of sleep and rest the day before
The last thing you want on your special day is for those pesky dark circles to appear. So get heaps of sleep and oodles of water the day before so your skin will glow inside and out.
DON’TS
1. Go overboard with shimmer
Sparkly, shimmery or frosty eyeshadows tend to reflect camera flashes. Reserve products like these as highlighters to accent certain parts of the face like the inner corners of the eye. It helps brighten the eye and make them look bigger. You can also use shimmery powder to highlight your cheekbones, but they can be a bad choice if you have oily skin.
2. Apply too much eye make-up
You want your eyes to stand out, not your eye make-up. Keep your eye make-up simple so that it highlights the features of your eyes. Avoid wearing falsies if they’re not comfortable too.
3. Overuse your mascara
The “spider” lashes are not a good look on your wedding day. Try out a few mascaras several days before your wedding to find the right look that brightens up your eyes without looking too clumpy. Opt for a lengthening mascara and follow-up with a few strokes of volumising mascara around the roots.
4. Skip the eyeshadow primer
Even if it’s your big day, you’re going to do a lot of running around, and that’ll involve some perspiration. Always use an eyeshadow primer before applying your make-up so that your make-up lasts. Another tip – do not use concealer on the eyelid as it’ll case your make-up to crease.
5. Go unprepared
The excitement of your special day is definitely going to get to you, so always come ready with a small bag of make-up essentials needed for quick touch-ups. This can include concealer, loose powder, lip colour, facial blotters, face spray, and more.
