A 17-year-old Indian girl hung herself after she was banned from going on Facebook by her parents, who wanted her to spend more time studying. The girl, Aishwarya S. Dahiwal, is a second-year college student from Parbhani and was found dead on Thursday morning.
According to a police officer’s statement to India Real Time, her permission to log onto Facebook was denied on Wednesday and that led to an argument with her parents. G.H. Lemgude, an investigating officer said, “Like all parents, their intentions were only to ensure that the girl did not go astray.”
“They advised her to concentrate on her technical studies and stay away from long mobile chats and social networking sites,” he added. Voice of Russia reported that Facebook is the preferred method of communication among teenagers in India compared to mobile phones.
Authorities also said that her body was found the next morning in her room and left a suicide note that reads, “Is Facebook so bad? I cannot stay in a home with such restrictions, as I can’t live without Facebook.”
The Dahiwal family, comprising jeweller, Sunil Dahiwal, his wife and two sons are still in shock of this terrifying incident. “We still can’t believe it. We are in deep shock. We just wanted her to focus on her studies. We never thought she would take such a harsh step,” told the devastating father to India Real Time.
