When Emily Helck was diagnosed with breast cancer in July last year, she started a blog called The Real Tumors of New Jersey to document her entire journey with breast cancer. Emily has already undergone a bilateral mastectomy, where both breasts are removed; and chemotherapy to remove the cancer.
When she started chemotherapy in September 2012, she decided to take a picture of herself every week to chronicle her journey to recovery; and then compile it all chronologically in a heartfelt 1-minute video.
Emily states in her blog:
“I’m still not completely sure why I took these photos. At first it had to do with documenting the hair saga. But it wound up becoming about something else, too. The photos became hash marks scratched on the wall, marking time spent inhabiting the world of this disease. Every time I set up the tripod was another week down. Or was it another week lost?”
The video – called “one year/one minute” is touching compilation of pictures that shows just how terrifying breast cancer can be. But with that said, the video is also a perfect message for the start of Pinktober aka Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
