Balenciaga was given the fine “Alexander Wang touch” in its new Autumn/Winter ’13-14 collection that was shown in Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. This collection represents Wang’s first collection for the French fashion house. Wanting to “bring two worlds together” in this collection, Wang took Cristobal Balenciaga’s standards very seriously – believing that each outfit isn’t complete unless beauty is achieved in every perspective of the outfit.
The fabrics used in the Balenciaga Autumn/Winter ’13-14 collection are restricted to Kabic, crepe, velvet, leather and fur with signature Balenciaga finishes. The complete feminine wardrobe emphasizes on body movement, as well as the opposition between the static and the dynamic.
Three themes are involved in this collection – genetic interpretation, minerality, and genetic twist. The House’s history being Wang’s inspiration for this collection has made him identified signatures that act as wardrobe basics in genetic interpretation. Minerality represents Wang’s idea of raw beauty and natural beauty (marble and crackled plaster). Every piece of the collection is genetically twisted with touches of Wang’s reinterpretation. Fur takes on the look of marble, leather has become mosaic, knit has taken on a plaster-like appearance, evening wear has turned into day wear, and backs are worn as fronts. Colors like black, optical white, ebony, cream and cypress are used to evoke a hand-sketched drawing.
