21-year-old Nurul Husna Zainal Abidin from Negri Sembilan is the first Malaysian entry in the World Muslim Women Beauty Pageant in Indonesia, and did us proud as she was crowned as the World Muslim Netizen 2013!
The World Muslim Women Beauty Pageant is said to be the Muslim world’s answer to the Miss World Pageant, that has been receiving protest from Muslim hardliners.
Nurul first heard about the competition from an Indonesian friend, and then registered and submitted a video of herself. She then headed to Jakarta to compete with a total of 20 women from various countries on September 18.
“Islam is portrayed as something beautiful. The Quran readings and other events in the beauty pageant were all planned according to Islamic law.”
The University Teknologi MARA student also wants the Malaysian government to organize a similar pageant, citing:
If the government organises a Muslim beauty pageant here, it would be well-received. The Muslim version of the beauty pageant teaches Islamic knowledge without sidelining the hijab fashion style.
“It isn’t wrong to organise such an event as it can open up opportunities for Muslim women to learn something new. At the same time, the government could use the opportunity to promote tourism in Malaysia.”
She told sources that participating in the World Muslim Women Beauty Pageant has deepened her knowledge of Islam as all the activities involved teaching the contestants how to be a Muslim woman and face the challenges of modern times.
Although Nigeria’s Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola won the crown, Nurul still did a fantastic job in our eyes. [Source]
