Bernama has recently reported that Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam is calling for the government to reduce the subsidy for sugar in stages, arguing that it’s for the good of the nation’s health.
Subramaniam says the sugar price increase would reduce the number of diabetic patents as people would reduce sugar consumption in their foods and beverages.
“The number of diabetic patients in the country has increased to 2.6 million or 15 percent of the total population. This is partly due to lack of control in the intake of sugar,” he said. [¹]
Subsequent to the 20-sen hike in RON95 petrol and diesel, and 15-sen increase in RON97 petrol, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hasan Malek promised that there would be no increase in the prices for sugar and flour.
“My ministry is very thankful for this cooperation from industry players and it shows that although there has been a reduction in fuel subsidy, they still support government efforts by not hiking prices of goods in the interest of the people,” said Malek. [²]
However, Subramaniam does make a good argument that the price of sugar should go up for the sake of health. Sugar is deemed a controlled commodity in Malaysia, is currently selling at RM2.50 per kilogram.
Do you think the Health Minister makes a valid argument? Or could it be another tactic to increase the earnings of the government funds? Share your thoughts.
