Did you know mermaids exist in Malaysia? Well, turns out one of them do!
Malaysian model Felixia Yeap first made headlines by becoming the country’s first Playboy Bunny at Macau’s Playboy Club Macao. But now, the former kindergarten teacher has decided to be a full-time mermaid.
“I’ve always been fascinated by mermaids. I love watching The Little Mermaid cartoon,” she said.
“While I’m an average swimmer, I’m pretty good at free-diving. Being a mermaid allows me to indulge in my free-diving hobby. As a bonus, I can earn some money. It’s a great opportunity.”
Yeap mentioned that she did a lot of research the “art of mermaiding”, and found it was relatively uncommon in Asia.
She performs mostly at private parties and outdoor fashion shows, charging RM4200 for a “30 to 45-minute” performance. A typical gig involves “swimming around in the pool, smiling and posing for cameras, as well as chit-chatting with guests”.
Unfortunately, Yeap says that a lot of Malaysian men find the idea of mermaiding foolish, claiming that most successful of men I’ve met have scoffed at her or brushed her off with ‘nonsense’.
“The fact is, kids are actually more open to mermaids than grown men.” [Source]
