Since we’re celebrating Hari Merdeka tomorrow and Malaysia Day on September 16th, the Lipstiq team has taken out some nail colours and played around with Merdeka-inspired nail art.
Here are five easy-to-do nail designs to show your patriotic spirit in a fun, stylish way!
Nail polish colours: Red, white, blue, yellow, glittered dark blue, glittered gold (basically colours of our national flag!)
Love MY nails
What you need: Blue, red, yellow colours, a brush or a toothpick
Go over your nail with a blue nail polish and wait for it to dry. With a small brush (we used an eyeliner brush, but a toothpick works as well), draw a heart in the middle of your nail. Clean the brush with a normal nail polish remover, and dip it carefully into the yellow colour to write the alphabets ‘MY’, for Malaysia!
Difficulty level: moderate
Nail polish used: Etude House, Elianto
Polkadots in national colours
What you need: Colours white, blue, red, yellow, nail dotting tool (can be bought at Etude House outlets)
You can choose a colour that you like as the base – we chose white to make the polkadots stand out more. The nail dotting tool will help you make perfect small dots, so we’d really recommend you to get it, especially if dots is your favourite nail art pattern!
Difficulty level: easy
Nail polish used: Etude House, Elianto, Sasa
Striped nails in red and white
What you need: Scotch tape, white and red nail colours, scissors
Wanna have the ‘Striped of Glory’ on your nails? It takes up a bit more time but it’s definitely eye-catching! Paint your nails with white nail colour and wait for them to dry – this is really important so you can’t be impatient. Then cut up small strips of Scotch tape, which you place on your dry white coloured nails. It’s really up to you to go vertical, horizontal or diagonal! Make sure the strips sit properly and are sealed on all sides. Take the red nail polish and go over your nail, and quickly remove the strips while the polish is still wet so you get clean edges.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Nail polish used: Sephora, O.P.I
Striped nails in national colours
What you need: Scotch tape, colours red, blue, yellow, white, scissors
You can be more colourful and have stripes of all four colours of our national flag on your fingers! Just follow the same instructions as above but alternate the red, blue and yellow.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Nail polish used: Sephora, O.P.I., Etude House, Elianto
Blue and gold glitter
What you need: Blue and gold glittered nail polish
Need something simple for your Merdeka party nights? Go for glitter colours and be a patriotic dancing queen! French Tip styled nails are pretty easy to do with just two colours from our national flag – blue and gold. Go over the blue polish as a base for your nails, and wait for it to dry. With the gold glitter polish, carefully paint a French Tip. You can also use a Scotch tape to paint a perfect straight line.
Difficulty level: Easy
Nail polish used: Skinfood, Ciate (available at Sephora Malaysia)
