Kuala Lumpur City Hall will be spending close to RM200 million for the maintenance and installation of 1,200 CCTVs that will be placed around the city. The project is expected to complete by the year end.

“The project will involve installing CCTVs at strategic spots, upgrading of existing CCTVs and carrying out maintenance for six years. We want to synchronize all activities under one roof,” said Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib, Mayor of KL City Hall.

The contractor, GTC Global Sdn Bhd will first install more than 300 CCTVs for crime prevention purposes as the police have identified the spots to place the CCTVs. The “eyes” allocated will be connected to all police stations in the city and more would be added based on feedback.

In order to monitor all traffic activities and crime prones area Phesal also said that the CCTV operation centre would be transferred to the Intergrated Transport Information System (ITIS) and would be upgrading CCTVs with speakers at Masjid India and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

City Hall Urban Transportation Department director Dr Leong Siew Mun said the city would also be upgrading its existing 419 CCTVs, of which 60 per cent are not working.

Although we really praise City Hall’s effort to make the city safer for the public, it’s still crucial for us to be responsible for our own safety. Feel free to look at some of our safety tips:
