A woman escaped with slight injuries after she was shot at by an unknown man in a carjacking attempt in Jalan Haji Ahmad here early today. The victim, Ruzelawati Basri, 35, suffered injuries in the right eye caused by glass fragments and was treated at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

In the incident at about 4am, Ruzelawati, who was driving a Toyota Alphard (MPV) alone, earlier left her Taman Mirama house and stopped for fuel at a petrol station. She then stopped in front of a restaurant in Jalan Haji Ahmad to phone her ex-husband in Putrajaya before being approached by a man who arrived in a dark blue car.

“Ruzelawati said the man, who was holding a pistol, knocked on the car and ordered her to open the door and get out of the MPV. Shocked, she sped off and later heard the sound of breaking glass,” Kuantan police chief ACP Mohd Jasmani Yusoff told reporters here today.

Initial police investigation found that a shot hit the left front door of the MPV. The motive is believed to be attempted carjacking. The police are investigating the case under section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
