Selamat Hari Raya! Your friends are most likely going to start inviting you to their house to indulge in some rendang, lemang, ketupat, and other delicious Malay delicacies this month, and it’s only right to come dressed appropriately for the occasion. Some of us, may unfortunately not own a traditional Malay costume, so here outfit ideas to help you look the part stylishly during your friends’ Raya open house!
Outfit 1
A lot of traditional Malay costumes rely on detailed embroidery and traditional prints to make it unique. Adapt to that tradition by wearing printed outfit that comes with a similar motif. Opt for bright and cheerful prints – flowers can never go wrong. Here, we’ve paired it with a shirt with a modest neckline and 3/4 sleeves. Don it with a pair of statement earrings, and tone it down with a pair of nude pumps.
Outfit 2
One of the most feminine Malaysian costumes is the kebaya. It captures the figure of a woman and it brings such elegance no matter what you pair it with. If you don’t have a baju kebaya, replace it with a kimono cardigan with an Oriental print. You can pair it with just about anything in your closet, but we’re opting for a simple black tank and jeans. Grab a brooch and pin both ends of the kimono around the waist to give it a kebaya effect. Pair it with a pretty pair of sandals and you’re all set!
Outfit 3
Kaftans are also perfect for attending Hari Raya open houses at your friends. They’re respectable, they’re comfortable, and roomy enough when you’ve had a little too much too eat! Instead of bright colors, opt for a kaftan with a combination of nude and gold hues. Pair your outfit with accessories in the nude palette like a cream-colored clutch, gold accessories and a bronzed pair of flats! It’ll certainly add a goddess-like flair to something so simple and comfortable!
Outfit 4
We’re seeing a lot of pastel shades this Raya, so why not get in the loop of current trend? Grab a modest green pastel dress and then pair it with bright and bold accessories. A hot fuchsia flat, an elegant purple clutch and bold earrings. Don’t forget to accessorize your hands too! We’re loving cuffs this season, but opt for a structured one to give a little edge to your outfit. Stray away from high heels because they could be a little provocative at times, and the last thing you want to do is disrespect the host.
Outfit 5
If you’re all about comfort and simplicity, grab a green top with an ethnic print and pair it with your favorite pair of jeans. Blue jeans would be perfect for a more casual setting so always check if black jeans would be a better option. And because you’re opting for jeans, you can pretty much accessorize with just about anything. We’ve decided to go with a sassy pair of black flats and a leopard print shoulder bag.
