It’s no surprise that the number of crimes with firearms has risen drastically. According to a report by the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu), June has suffered more crimes involving firearms with 14 gang robberies. [Source]
In the last two weeks, two high-profile shootings took place. The first being the attempted murder of anti-crime activist R. Sri Sanjeevan in Jempol, and the shooting of Arab-Malaysian Bank founder Hussain Najadi in Jalan Ceylon, Kuala Lumpur.
While the government is currently finding ways to, there needs to be stricter laws for gun control in Malaysia. Civilians are allowed to have only handguns in Malaysia, and must go though a very extensive licensing process before they can acquire it, however robbers and criminals are able to obtain smuggled firearms with ease.
With the rampant increase of gun-related crimes in Malaysia, we can’t help but share these safety tips:
1. Be wary of strangers
It’s hard to accept that we can no longer tell if the stranger we meet are genuine, and while it’s hard to face these facts, it’s time we be cautious about the strangers we meet. It’s hard to list down a tactic for every situation, but the key is to never put yourself in a vulnerable situation. For example, if you’re in your car and someone knocks at your window for help, instead of opening your door or rolling the window down full, just leave a small gap at your window enough to hear what the person wants. Keep your doors locked too.
2. Never flash your wealth
When you’re walking out on the streets, think twice about wearing your expensive jewelry or accessories. Showing off your wealth puts you at more risk of being robbed.
3. Always be alert
We’re often plagued by our own personal stresses, and there are times when we completely forget what’s going on in reality. Whenever you shift your focus from the current situation you’re in, you put yourself at risk of being robbed. Always walk out with a sense of purpose, as if you know where you’re going and what you intend to do.
4. Avoid quiet, seedy areas
It’s true that a lot of crimes take place in populated areas these days, but it still helps to always stay in areas with lots of people. Even when it happens, there will still be witnesses to help you.
5. Compromise with your attacker
It’s no surprise that everyone immediately runs in a state of panic when confronted with a gun. If a robber assaults you at gunpoint, cooperate with his demands for the sake of your safety. If he asks for your phone, wallet or jewelry, give it to him, but tell him not to harm you when you give it. Chances are, he’s also panicking inside. But remember not to sound demanding. Stay calm and speak gently.
