24-year-old Marte Deborah Dalelv who was charged under three acts for being a victim of rape in Dubai, is free to leave the country. On Sunday, officials have dropped her 16-month prison sentence for having sex outside marriage.
Marte was allegedly raped by a co-worker in March, and when she headed to the police to lodge a report, she was charged for having sex outside marriage. Her sentenced caused a worldwide outrage over the Islamic-based legal codes in Dubai.
“I have my passport back. I am pardoned,” said Marte, who worked for an interior design firm in Qatar and was in Dubai for a business meeting when the alleged rape took place.
Marte’s attacker is identified as a 33-year-old Sudanese man who was also charged with consuming alcohol and sex outside marriage. He received a 13-month jail sentence, while Marte was slapped with 16 months.
“I have my life back,” said Marte. “This is a great day.”
