The Fatwa Committee of the National Council for Islamic Affairs declared that shisha and water-pipe smoking is haram (illegal) for Muslims.

Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Abdul Shukor Husin who is the committee chairperson for the Fatwa Committee, said Muslims were also prohibited from providing shisha-smoking services or any activity associated with shisha.

“After listening to the experts from the Health Ministry and scrutinising medical and scientific evidence from the country and abroad on the ill-effects of shisha, the committee decided to prohibit shisha,” he said.

He further explained that shisha smoking will have a huge crucial effect in the health of the individual, national economic growth and shaping of future generations. Various studies around the world show that shisha smoking has a detrimental effect an its widespread practice, particularly among youths and women, was most worrying.

“Shisha is clearly harmful to health. It is a wasteful activity that is categorised as a bad or despicable thing that all Muslims should avoid,” said Abdul Shukor.

A recent study suggested that smoking hooka is worse for you than smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day. Do you and your friends often smoke shisha? What do you think of this new law? [Source]
