If you’ve always been afraid to give modeling a try because you don’t have Gisele Bundchen’s stats, then you’ll be happy to know that there’s a modeling agency that is happy to represent women of ALL sizes.
The modeling industry generally categorizes women in two sizes – ‘straight size’ (US 0-2) or ‘plus size’ (12 -16). Jag, the first agency in New York dedicated solely to women of all sizes, was found by former Ford agents Gary Dakin and Jaclyn Sarka. They both co-directed Ford’s plus board for many years.
“The goal is putting girls of a all sizes on the covers of magazines, in advertising, and not stopping”, Dakin said.
Dakin said that in the late ’90s and early ’00s, plus sized models were paid to “stand in a corner and wear an ugly sweater”. Much like how we’d perceive that a chubby girl would be perfect for an ad campaign that had to do with food.
Jag won’t be limited to representing one particular size of girl. “The average size of the girls [we represent] is a 14/16 but there are 10s and the are 18s and if there’s a size 8 or a size 6 that we fall in love with we’ll take them on,” said Dakin.
Then he made the most important point of all: “We’re not going to limit ourselves because the industry shouldn’t be limiting to anybody”.
The agency will start with an exclusive roaster of about 30 models including Jennie Runk, Kaela Humphries, Kami Crawford , Mckenzie Raley and Myla Dalbesio.
Jennie Runk is best known for becoming the first plus size woman to appear in H&M’s swimwear campaign, modeling Beyonce’s swimwear line.
We’re hoping for agencies to follow Jag’s example, and who knows – there will be no need to have a ‘plus-size’ category in the future.
