Describe your personal style: I have a love for beautiful things – beautiful fabrics, beautiful cuts, beautiful silhouettes. I love all things timeless (think Valentino, Dior, Elie Saab, Marchesa), but I also like to experiment with danger or go risqué when it comes to fashion. And I think I can be pretty unconventional when I wear my stuff. For example, I’d pair a rouge red dress -appropriate for the office – with high top sneakers. Or a lace top with black leather shorts. Or a cute white peplum top with military-inspired camouflage trousers. For me, it’s all about the opposites – the whole idea is to balance ladylike with elements of street style i.e. grunge/rock/punk. Other times, if I’m too lazy to dress up, I would pair a white shirt/top with a crazy print vest/trousers – that immediately gives the whole look a ‘buzz’.
I’m glad that my kind of work allows me to dress as I like; to experiment with fashion in my own way. And no, don’t get me wrong, I do not condone hot pants. They do not fall into the category of work-appropriate dressing.
What do you think of the fashion scene in KL: I have heard this being said a thousand times, and yes, I do believe in it: there is hope for the fashion scene in KL. We do have designers really aiming to get it right, and more and more fashion buyers are getting really picky and selective about what they bring into their boutiques, especially independent boutiques. And that’s a great thing, because you cannot just scrimp on fabric quality and not know nor understand the trends … you have got to know the market and the runways. What the designers are putting out there. Then take back those ideas – what you’ve seen, heard and feel – and reinterpret them on the streets. And unless you’re blessed with some sort of talent to instinctively be able to predict what’s showing next on Fashion Week, you gotta do your research. Don’t be lazy.
