Humans only taste four flavors – sweet, salty, bitter and sour. We taste salt because we need it in our body (for our muscles, nervous system etc.), sugar because it fuels our brains with energy, the bitter taste is usually to be avoided because it is typically toxic and sour is a more complex flavour to understand. However, if you look at all the tastes we experience, they all have important complexities. So why do some of us prefer certain tastes to others? Taste and personality develops in our brain at the same time and are both found in the limbic lobe, this provides a strong link between the two.
Neurologist Dr. Alan Hirsch has tested more than 18, 000 peoples food choices and personalities as he is convinced by the link. Taking these tests and 24 years of scientific studies, Dr. Hirsch released a book titled “What Flavor Is Your Personality?“. In the book Dr. Hirsch takes the scientific findings channeling them to the average reader through ice cream flavours, letting you know which flavour determines which personality traits. So heres what your ice cream is saying about you!
Chocolate Chip: Ambitious, accomplished, competitive and generous.
Mint Choc Chip: Ambitious, honest and confident but slightly skeptical. The mint choc chip lover is typically closest to family and plans for the future.
Coffee: Adventurous, dramatic, flirtatious and tends to be hardworking.
Strawberry: Logical, loyal, humble and supportive.
Vanilla: In spite of the much told myth, vanilla lovers are not boring or mundane! They are emotionally expressive, ambitious and rely on intuition as opposed to logic. They prefer secure romantic relationships.
If, for some bizarre reason, you don’t like ice cream or the person you are trying to suss out doesn’t here are the personality links to some taste palettes.
Salt: If a person craves salt they are usually the laid back, relaxed type of person who goes with the flow.
Spice: People to steer to spice are usually adventurous and give attention to detail.
Sweet: The sweet tooth enjoys standing out and feeling special, veering towards the wild side.
Sweet and salty combined: The combination of these two palettes usually means a creative, artistic type of person who set themselves apart from the rest and sometimes is a loner.
Next time you are eating out or at the ice cream parlour have a think about what you’re ordering and see if it reflects on your personality or not, you may be surprised!
