How To Choose The Right Foundation For You

An important step for flawless makeup lies in your foundation. Foundation is important in your makeup regime to even out your skin tone and to help your makeup look more balanced, while enhancing your features too. Though, a lot of women have trouble finding the right foundation. On top of finding the right hade, getting the right consistency is also quite a challenge.

By following these simple steps, your search for the right foundation will be a smoother journey that before.

Step 1: Identifying your skin type

You will want a foundation that is tailor made for your type of skin for the best results. Luckily there are tonnes of different formulations on the market so there is one for everyone. First you want to figure out whether your skin is more oily or dry, you will probably know this anyway. If you’re oily go for one that is either ‘oil-free’ or ‘mattifying’ and if you’re dry go for the ‘moisture-rich’ or ‘hydrating’ types. If you have combination skin cream to powder bases work great because the creaminess of the foundation counteracts the dryness and the powder will mattify more oily parts.

Step 2: Purpose

Different foundations work better for different occasions so you will have to determine where you will be wearing the foundation and for what purpose etc. For example, foundations with high SPF are great if you’re going to be out exposed to the sunlight all day but they may not be so great if you’re going to be photographed as they reflect the flash and will make your face appear pale in pictures. Foundations with shimmer are nice to wear on nights out as it gives you a dewy finish and a more polished look, however you won’t want to wear these day to day typically because having a shimmery face isn’t the best look!

Step 3: Coverage

Evaluate your skin and the type of coverage you think you will need and choose accordingly. Some foundations are workable and you can apply layers if you want more coverage on certain days but some just solely serve one sort of coverage.

Step 4: Undertones

Before just blindly picking a colour off the shelf that looks like it would suit you, a much more effective way to find a tone that will be true to your skin colour is by deciphering undertones. Yellow based foundations will look the most natural on most people though if you are paler a foundation with a pink undertone will serve you better. If you have a lot of redness in your skin it is also good to go with one that has a green undertone as this will counteract any redness.
