Q&A WITH RENOWNED MAKE-UP ARTIST BOBBI BROWN
Question: In your opinion, what is the best wedding day makeup?
Bobbi Brown: On her wedding day, every bride should look like herself at her most beautiful. This is not the time to try something edgy, trendy or dramatically different from what you usually wear. It’s about choosing a makeup look that enhances your features so you look like yourself at your most radiant. You’ll have your wedding album for the rest of your life so keep your look timeless.
Q: Any tips on how to create a timeless and classic wedding day look?
Bobbi Brown:
EYES: First, make sure you start out with a corrector and concealer under the eye. It will instantly make you look refreshed and well-rested. Use a light matte shadow like Cream Eye Shadow as a base (or highlighter on the brow bone if you have light skin). Then, apply a soft shimmery shadow like Sparkle Eye Shadow in Pink Lilac (RM90) or a metallic eye shadow like Metallic Eye Shadow in Oyster Grey (RM85) on the lower lid from lash line to crease. To really make eyes pop, line them with Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink (RM85). For added intensity, I like to double line eyes with Eye Shadow in Espresso (RM85). I love our new Luxe Eye Palette (RM240) because it has a handful of soft pastel and cool grey eye shadows with different textures and finishes—perfect for creating a modern yet classic bridal look. Last but not least, make sure you use a water-resistant liner that can withstand tears of joy. Try No Smudge Mascara (RM95), it’s long-wearing, waterproof mascara that defines, curls and lengthens lashes. Apply two or three coats for standout eyes.
SKIN/CHEEKS: When it comes to getting picture- perfect photos, foundation is essential. Look for one that’s skin tone correct – it should have a yellow base to blend with natural undertones found in most women’s skin tone. Then, apply pressed powder to skin to help control shine. Stay away from translucent powders as they’re not invisible and just make the skin look ashy.
For a pretty flush that lasts, use two shades of blush. Start with a neutral shade, and apply it on the apples of the cheeks, blending up into the hairline, then downward to soften. Then, apply a pop of brighter blush just on the apples of the cheeks. For a lit-from-within glow that looks great in photographs, lightly dust Luxe Sparkle Powder (RM175) on the high points of the face including your cheekbones.
LIPS: Neutral lip colors can look washed out in photographs, so choose a shade that’s one or two shades brighter than your natural lip color. Try using a brighter shade of pink, rose or plum.
Q: What look did you choose for your wedding day?
Bobbi Brown: I loved being a bride and can still remember it like it was yesterday. I chose a look that reflected my classic, fresh and simple style. I went for a rosy lipstick, a soft pale pink cheek and my skin looked like skin. I wore a white tailored jacket with a matching mini skirt. I felt beautiful and more importantly, I still felt like myself.
Q: Any tips for last minute touch ups?
Bobbi Brown: Remember to have fun, relax and enjoy! For afternoon touch-ups, I recommend using a Face Touch Up Stick (RM100) to even out any red spots or uneven skin tone. Rather than re-applying a whole new layer of foundation, a touch-up stick provides coverage only where you need it. Other key makeup essentials to keep in your bag are: blush, lip color and concealer. A customizable palette is ideal for touch-ups and can help you save time, as well as room in your bag. Our new Luxe Six-Pan palette (RM65) can hold up six shades of your favorite Bobbi Brown eye shadows and blushes.
Q: Do you recommend scheduling a consultation with a makeup artist prior to your wedding day?
Bobbi Brown: Doing a consultation and run-through of the makeup prior to your wedding day is a must. Reserve a one- hour appointment about four to six weeks prior to the wedding to create and practice the look. Bring examples of makeup looks you like—tear sheets from magazines or a photo of yourself that you feel captures you at your most beautiful—and also some details about the wedding itself (is it on the beach, in a religious setting, etc.), which will help the makeup artist create a look that will work perfectly for your big day.
