After 26 years of reigning one of the most successful football teams in the UK, Sir Alex Ferguson is planning to step down as the manager of Manchester United at the end of the season.
“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about. It is the right time,” he said. He once cited that his health is the primary factor in any decision to retire. In 27 years, Ferguson has guided the club to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cup wins and the Champions League twice.
He will also undergo hip surgery in the summer and is confident his successor will take over a club in good health after winning just several days ago.
“It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so,” he said.
“The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.”
Ah, such sunny words! We certainly do wish him the best of health! in the meantime, Jose Mourinho and David Moyes are being suggested as possible successors.
