A tale of a friend’s sacrifice is a story like no other. Yamuna Saundari Subramaniam and her friend, Zahidah Aimi Mohd Zaki were crossing the road in Porthsmouth, England when an oncoming van hit them at a pedestrian crossing.
Yamuna and Zahidah were treated at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham. Speaking from her hospital bed, Yamuna said she saw the van coming towards them as they were crossing the road.
“I tried to push Zahidah out of the way, but I got hit first and then the van hit Zahidah. I fell. At first I couldn’t see where Zahidah was and I was in pain,” said the final year TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) student. The students waited of the lights to change, and have taken the pedestrian crossing many times.
It was suspected that Yamnu suffered fractured ribs, but she was discharged from the hospital yesterday. As for Zahidah, she suffered a broken pelvic bone, fractured upper ribs and slight bleeding in her kidney. She was given painkillers and would remain in the hospital for sometime.
According to a source, the driver was arrested on suspicion of drink drinking.
