17-year old Chin Hui Wei, author behind a poignant blogpost about her mother’s murder My Mother, My Hero, held her tears back as she and her family paid their last respects to her mother.
Hui Wei’s mother, Irene Ong Ai Sam was stabbed to death while jogging in the Bukit Gasing hiking trail during a charity run. She died while trying to protect her youngest daughter.
With her father and sister by her side, Hui Wei stood calm as she watch a stream of people who placed flower stalks on top of the casket that bore the remains of her mother.
Irene Ong was a social activist. She was a member o the parent-teacher association of SMK Taman SEA and the Kiwanis Club, among other social clubs and charity groups.
Irene’s sister, Suzie said that the death of her sister has a left a hole in her heart. “My two sisters and I will not be able to replace Irene but we will do our best to be mamas to Hui Ying and Hui Wei,” she said.
Ong’s neighbor, Zabedah Abdullah, 64, said she would miss the chats with Irene over the fence between their houses. Patsy Ng, who served at the Sunday school of the PJ Evangelical Free Church with Irene said that she was a motherly figure adored by children.
“Not only was she an excellent mother to her two daughter, she also played a large hand in nurturing the children at our church,” said Ng.
